Clio Developer Documentation Hub

More than 150,000 legal professionals use Clio to run their legal practices. They come in all sizes, specializing in every field of law, and each has unique needs. Clio solves many of their biggest problems out of the box—but every legal practice is different.

That's where you come in. You may have an existing legal tech business and want to integrate with Clio to supercharge your customers' workflows. You might have an idea for the next great app to solve the problems of law firms and their customers. You might even work at a firm looking to customize its workflows by working with Clio data directly. No matter the circumstance, Clio's API offers you the ability to power workflows, build integrations, and drive innovation in the legal space.

Getting Started

To start building on Clio's API, you can sign up for a trial account to test Clio's workflows and access the API for seven days. After that, if you're interested in continuing to build, you can apply to convert your trial account to a free developer account.

If you are looking to build a private app for use by a single Clio account rather than a public app listed in our App Directory, you can review our page on private apps.

Once you have a trial account, you can start building your integration. Use the following resources to get started:

Once you've finished building your app or integration, it's time to get it in front of Clio customers. You can review our launch requirements to get an overview of the steps needed to launch in the Clio App Directory.

Can you tell me what to build?

Clio does not currently publicize our product roadmap. If you are curious about trends in the legal technology space, you can reference our Legal Trends Report.

Can Clio help me build my app?

Clio cannot offer resources for building an integration at this time. If you need additional assistance building your integration, a Clio Certified Consultant may be able to assist.

We also maintain an example application that you can use as a reference for handling authorization and API calls.

What happens if I don't pass the security review?

The Clio team will highlight areas that need attention so you can build a safe and secure app. Our team will work with you to ensure you meet the correct standards.

I've launched my app. How can I strengthen my relationship with Clio?

You can find information about our Certified App Program in the "Launch and Grow Your App" section of the handbook.
